Why reading with your child is important
Did you know? When parents read just one book per day to their toddler, by the time their child entered kindergarten, they had heard 290,000 more words than children who were read to 3 or fewer days per week.
Children read to more frequently at age 4-5 achieve higher scores on the national assessment program. These differences in reading and cognitive skills are not related to the child’s family background or home environment but are the direct result of how frequently they have been read to prior to starting school.
Try to read at least one book to your child per day. It may help to pick a particular time for reading, such as before bedtime or after breakfast. Creating a routine will not only help you remember but also help your child look forward to story time.
