HAVE YOU NOTICED YOUR CHILD DELETING SOUNDS OR SYLLABLES IN WORDS?
Have you noticed your child deleting sounds or syllables in words? This may be negatively impacting what you understand from them.
Try segmenting sounds (c-a-t cat). For sounds in words, start with your palms facing each other, for every sound move your hands a little further apart as you say the sound then when you put the sounds back together to form the word, clap your hands back together and say the word. Instead of clapping, you could also use pieces of food/snacks, blocks, or other toys to count the number of sounds in a word then put the word back together.
For syllables, try counting out how many “parts” you and your child hear in a word. You can clap the parts/syllables out or be creative (play a note on the piano for each syllable, tap on the floor, touch your nose, etc.). These skills can help your child better understand the words they say, plus these are important skills for pre-literacy as well!
